Henry Knox Travel Kit, ca. 1790

This gentleman's traveling kit was owned by Henry Knox (1750–1806), the first U.S. Secretary of War, who served in the administration of Pres. George Washington from 1789 to 1794. Before the Revolution, Knox was a bookseller who taught himself about artillery and, after earning Washington's trust, served as chief of artillery in the Continental Army for most of Washington's campaigns.

The kit is now owned by and displayed in the General Henry Knox Museum in Thomaston, Maine.
