Description:

This image shows a depiction of Shays' Rebellion. In this illustration, government militia soldiers led by General William Shepard fire on protestors led by Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Shays known as the Regulators. The Regulators consisted of four thousand rebels who led the charge to overthrow the Massachusetts state government because of their increased efforts to collect taxes from individuals. The federal government, constrained by the Articles of Confederation, was unable to send federal troops to quash the rebellion. Although the government was able to prevent the rebellion, it showcased the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and the fledgling new government of the United States.
