Description: The East Los Angeles Walkouts, the “Chicano Blowouts,” were a landmark series of student-led protests in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Thousands of Mexican American high school students walked out of classes to demand an end to discriminatory policies, an inclusive curriculum, and equal educational opportunities. The first walkout occurred on March 5, 1968, at Roosevelt, Garfield, Lincoln, Belmont, and Wilson High Schools. Within days, up to 22,000 students participated across seven schools, making it one of the largest student demonstrations in U.S. history.
