Description: The Young Lords Organization (YLO) emerged in 1968 from a Puerto Rican street gang in Chicago. It became a revolutionary civil and human rights group active through the early 1970s. Under the leadership of José “Cha Cha” Jiménez, the YLO adopted a Marxist–Leninist revolutionary nationalism platform and modeled many of its tactics on the Black Panther Party. It engaged in high‑visibility direct actions, such as building occupations, sit‑ins, and the famous “Garbage Offensive,” to demand better services and self‑determination for Puerto Rican and other oppressed communities.
