Description: El Plan de Santa Bárbara was a 155-page document crafted by the Chicano Coordinating Council on Higher Education at the University of California, Santa Bárbara. It served as a blueprint for establishing and developing Chicana/o Studies programs across U.S. colleges and universities. It also laid the groundwork for the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) student organization. This plan aimed to address the historical underrepresentation and marginalization of Chicano/a students and faculty by advocating for an inclusive curriculum, increased representation of Chicanos in all academic roles, the creation of support programs for Chicano students, and community control and involvement in Chicano education. El Plan de Santa Bárbara leveraged higher education as a tool for social justice, cultural self-determination, and political consciousness within the Chicano community.
